I, with my wife, went to see the world famous monument, the Taj. We crossed lofty outer gate and moved in.
On the marble terrace on which the beautiful Taj stands, we saw a crippled boy. He could not use his legs. It is customary for Taj seers to take off their shoes, etc; here before going inside the monument. There were about 20 pairs of shoes, chappals,etc. in charge of the boy. He was all smiles and full of confidence. He was doing his job nicely and briskly. He arranged the pairs neatly. His memory seemed to be quite excellence. "Bapuji, here is your pair of boots", he addressed the gentleman to whom the pair belonged and put out the pair. There was no bungling. For this nice service he was paid five paise per pair. "Mem Sahib, here is your pair of sandals", he said in a precise tone and handed the sandals with a smile thankfully. "what a smart lad", my wife exclaimed. "Smart and useful", I exclaimed, "How useful and responsible a citizen of the society".
Two months later, we again visited the city of Taj. As we turned into Dareso No.2 street, I caught, the Hira Chappal
Store staring at us. Since my wife wanted a pair of leather chapples we headed for the store. To our mingled feeling of surprise and delight, we saw the same crippled boy in the store that we saw on the terrace of the Taj. The same elan, the same sweet smile, the same promptitude. He was serving the customers with his customary smile. He briskly brushed the shoes, etc. With a rag, put the footwear near the feet of the customer and then asked in a sweet charming tone, "Babuji, slip your foot into the shoe and see if it is the right size or not," Then he attended the nearest customer and repeated the process.
" Hello boy, how do you come to be here ? ", I said, "I saw you on the terrace of the Taj." The boy looked up, beamed with a pleasing smile and replied." The proprietor of the store happened to see me there. He was so pleased with my service there that he gave me employment here.Babujji, I am quite happy with my lot. I want to live with respect. That is all. I am contented with Rs 150/- a month. That is what I am getting here. Like other cripples. I could, I could have taken to begging but In did not. I hate begging. Babuji, what is lost is not important, what is left is important. What was the crippled bot doing on the marble terrace of the Taj?
